I often see it said that “Helo is a Star Trek character trapped in a BSG world.” But I think that’s not entirely an apt description. I’ve even seen this said about Lee—Lee, they say, is on the fast track for Starfleet Command. But he’s stuck in a BSG world. Yes, and no. Helo thinks he’s a Star Trek character. Lee wants to be a Star Trek character. But I’ll tell you who’s the true Star Trek character stuck in a BSG world—Felix Gaeta.

Lots of people hate Gaeta. Whatever. Go away. I love him wholeheartedly. The more I watch the show the more I love him. Let’s start with “33” just because that’s where my brain wants to go. Gaeta plotted a new jump every 33 minutes, when it was made pretty clear in the mini-series that FTL jumps were incredibly rare occurrences. That means this man was doing intense scientific mathematical calculations for five days straight. FIVE DAYS. Did he ever stop? Not that I saw. Did he ever complain? Nope. Was there ever a word of stress or abuse or anything from him but polite and swift fulfillment of his duties to the best of his ability? Nope. Math. For five days. And while he doesn’t quite get a scene like Kendra Shaw’s where he gets to SAY he hasn’t left his post since the attacks, I’m pretty damn sure that he was there the whole time.
