what does this have to do with loki
not sure if sarcastic buuut here have crude wiki exerpts:
“In Norse mythology, Svaðilfari (Old Norse ”unlucky traveler”[1]) is a stallion that fathered the eight-legged horse Sleipnir with Loki (in the form of a mare). …
…However, Loki “had such dealings” with Svaðilfari that “somewhat later” Loki gave birth to a gray foal with eight legs; the horseSleipnir, “the best horse among gods and men”.[3]”
There’s probably more interpretations of that myth but either way that’s the joke.
He presumably mated with Svaðilfari and gave birth to the horse Sleipnir.
He had sex with a horse.
No, Loki was raped when he was put under a spell by his own father that turned him into a mare. His father did nothing to stop Svaðilfari from raping his own son, and the end result was Sleipnir. And even though Loki despised the occurrence and hated them both for their horrible crimes (Odin for doing nothing to protect his son, and Svaðilfari for the rape itself), he still acted properly and was a good mother to Sleipnir, despite his unfortunate birth. So people have really got to stop posting things like this, seriously. It’s the equivalent of a rape joke and it’s starting to make me a little nauseous. I’m also deleting the link because this is NOT “Pure Internet Gold”
Know your facts people.
Wow, I didn’t know that. ._.
Yeah, it’s not a joke like half the fandom thinks it is. It’s not funny.

So as ya’ll know I sell my chainmaille at a local farmer’s market. Lucky for me the first month of the market my booth was next to the prettiest quilts ever! So I decided to get one made for myself with a custom algiz rune quilt square. SO HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS. diwkabskdk
Also idk what’s up with my phone but the colours are actually a light green on the outside (and underside), like a charcoal-y grey, and a dark purple.
Pagan Misconceptions (by other Pagans)
Just to clear a few things up.
Not all of us:
- are eclectic Wiccan
- practice witchcraft (of any kind)
- honour ‘the God and Goddess’
- are Earth-honouring or nature-orientated
- celebrate the Wheel of the Year
- cast circles/call quarters/invoke elements in ritual
- believe in/practice divination
- are interested in anything considered New Age
The rest of us:
- are neo-Druids, Heathens, Hellenics, Kemetics, non-Wiccan Witches, Eclectics, Reconstructionists…(the list goes on…)
- practice folk/green/kitchen/hedge witchcraft (if at all!)
- are polytheistic, pantheistic, panentheistic, atheistic…
- celebrate Greek, Egyptian, Roman, Northern European (etc.) holy days (along with or instead of the Wheel of the Year.)
- do not include Crowley-inspired ceremonial practices in our rituals
The point I’m trying to make here is that you can’t lump all neo-Pagans under the same Wiccan-coloured umbrella because not all of us fit nicely underneath it.
Some of us do - that’s OK.
Some of us don’t - and that’s OK, too!
I’m not trying to put down the Earth-honouring, circle-casting, Sabbat-celebrating eclectic Wiccanesque types, not in the slightest. But since they make up the majority of Pagans out there, the rest of us tend to get…over-shadowed.
Do you get me?
Of course, this totally doesn’t help with defining Paganism but I’m not even gonna go there…
a little note on heathenism/asatru/norse paganism
you can’t be a heathen and completely not believe in the Gods . Either you believe in the Gods and are a true heathen, or your just some one who wears a hammer and is about rebelling against others. Heathenism/asatru is not about rebelling, it’s about so much more. Thor’s hammer is a sign of faith. it’s Thor’s hammer, it’s about valhalla or hel. it’s not a fashion statement. This isn’t christianity or judaism or w/e where you can wear a cross/star/moon star what ever and be a small believer,Thor’s hammer is a symbol of knowing that Thor knows you’re there and that you trust in him, it’s also a symbol that lets thor know that you want battle to come to you. it’s victory or valhalla.

I really hope you’re a troll.

So there’s a whole lot of recon Asatruar on Tumblr
(at least compared to Northern Tradition Pagans / Norse Pagans from what I can tell), but I’m trying to find some more blogs closer to the Northern Trad side of things.
I need some help, Heathen peeps.
Any of you have any good Heathen/Asatru/General Pagan blogs here on Tumblr that you could recommend? I could use some more on my dash.

Goat's Milk, Cucumber, Mint and Melon: On Heathenry and Gender Roles
HeathenMom: chock full of unpopular opinion, although i can’t imagine whyI’m going to apologize in advance if this turns into a rant, but I’ve been seeing comments lately around the ‘net that just piss me off. I try not to let things said on the internet piss me off, but this needs to be said. I’m probably going to jump around a bit, so bear with me.
ok, i’ll bite. in the old Heathen societies, asexual people or people with gender identity issues (for lack of a better expression) were generally the shaman or seeress of the tribe or region and held in the highest esteem. the reason for the ‘antiquated’ ideas about gender roles is the plain and simple fact that it worked. men and women were concerned with working hard, surviving, and preserving their bloodline. they weren’t soft, bored, air-conditioned, hyper-sensitive, and over-concerned with how everyone viewed their every choice. the woman of the house didn’t sit around and bitch about how she wanted a corporate job and an education and how Thorsson had come home drunk again because these things weren’t in the scope of their reality.
i am all in favor of traditional gender roles for myself. i am the mother of my home in every sense of the word. i am very feminine or ‘womanly’ in the fact that i am a nurturing mother bear with an extremely strong mind. i am the teacher of my kids and the keeper of my home. you can do whatever you want, but know it only becomes an issue when you make it one. if you love your life, why does anyone else have to approve? for example, i could run around every day bemoaning my fate as a Heathen in this Christio-normative society, but i don’t. it’s a waste of energy and i am satisfied with my path, i love it. find a way to function beautifully in the reality you’ve created for yourself. not every one is going to like you or your choices or the way you dress or what you drive. who gives a fuck what society thinks or determines to be normal?
also, i do not consider Heathenry to be only reconstructionalist. personally, i am about reclaiming the spirituality, not rebuilding the society. and you will see examples of ‘manly viking syndrome’ anywhere that a certain type of male gather, regardless of their political or spiritual leanings.
i would never tell anyone to live in a way that they found unnatural or unsatisfying, but i would also never feel guilty about living my life in the way i see fit. like it or lump it, you know? that’s the good thing about living in the world we are in today, you can make whatever choices you want; and you can deal with the consequences, whether they are good or bad.
Well I’ve read this and I have a few comments and questions.
”[…] or people with gender identity issues (for lack of a better expression) […]”
- 2 great ways to rewrite this would be, “[…] or people who did not fall under the gender binary […]” and, “[…] or people who did not wholly identify as either male or female […]” I only edit like this because queer people don’t have issues, we have identity, and the way this phrase was written completely erases that identity.
”[…] but know it only becomes an issue when you make it one.”
- Or when people beat you within an inch of your life because they’re biological determinist expletives.
“who gives a fuck what society thinks or determines to be normal?”
- Please see above.
- Also when I’m still making 20% less per year than a “man” with equal qualifications it’s a little off-putting.
“also, i do not consider Heathenry to be only reconstructionalist.”
- This is true. Where in the original post did it say that all Heathenry was all reconstructionist, though? I missed that. I would have edited it out if I’d caught it!
It’s great to hear that you’re happy with being placed in a traditional gender role! Makes life easier I’m sure. So thumbs up on that point!
I’m very confused, however, with the idea that you’re expressing in which people are more than welcome to express themselves however they like, keeping in mind they need not be concerned with how their expression is read by others. In a society wherein masculinity is still prized over femininity it’s quite simply not that simple.
As a quick personal example: I, and many like me, need to work full-time in order to make ends meet. When I’ve been working in a field comparable to my boyfriend’s for the exact same amount of time he has, but I’m now making 3 dollars less (and most of my job offers wanted to pay me less than what I’m getting now), I’m pretty sure that’s something to be upset about.
There is nothing wrong with choosing to be a stay-at-home Mom. There’s also nothing wrong, however, with being a FAAB queer who wants a professional life. I think the moment one side starts to invalidate the other there are problems.
At what point does a social injustice stop being something people are welcome to express their opinion on, and start being something that should simply accept?
EDIT: Looking back, the original question of the topic was never actually addressed either. SO. “I’m kind of wondering if it (aaliriyah: the notion that women are women and men are men, as it were) has anything to do with the more conservative politics of Heathenry in the US?”

On Heathenry and Gender Roles
I’m going to apologize in advance if this turns into a rant, but I’ve been seeing comments lately around the ‘net that just piss me off. I try not to let things said on the internet piss me off, but this needs to be said. I’m probably going to jump around a bit, so bear with me.
I heard this quote once: “Heathenry allows men to be manly and women to be womanly,” and I don’t know about you, but this statement bothers me. What the Hel do the terms “womanly” and “manly” even mean? More importantly, why do some still insist on keeping such antiquated views in Heathenry? What’s with the “Manly Viking Syndrome”?
I often hear the excuse “but women had power back then” and I hate this argument, because compared to we moderns, Heathen women had crap-tastic lives. Sure, they were better off than say, women in Athens, but nowadays? Um, no, not at all. It seems like there’s an unfortunate tendency towards romanticizing the past in the Heathen community, and I honestly don’t think such an attitude helps at all.
The clincher is that whenever I bring these things up, I tend to get shot down or called a feminist (as if the term “feminist” is the same as “tapeworm”). I do consider myself a feminist, but I find it ironic that for a community that prides itself on scholarship (particularly the “harder” reconstructionists) there’s a real resistance to critique (which, in my opinion, is the exact opposite of scholarship). I don’t call myself Heathen because the term to me implies some form of reconstructionism, but I also don’t want to associate with the rigid viewpoints that some Heathens seem to espouse. I’m kind of wondering if it has anything to do with the more conservative politics of Heathenry in the US? Ironically, Heathenry in Iceland is actually associated with the political left. It’s strange how things work out like that.
Gefion via a FetLife Group Topic
I think this is a great write-up, and it accurately represents a lot of the thoughts regarding gender and gender roles within Heathenry that I’ve had. I would never have been able to sum up my concerns and questions regarding the topic as well as she did.
So now I call to everyone who’s reading this: What’s your take on the subject of antiquated gender roles within the Heathen community?
